Terms of Use

These are the rules for using The Rock. They exist so that everyone here can trust each other. By creating an account, or by agreeing when asked, you accept them.

“We”, “us” and “The Rock” mean the students who build, run and moderate it. “You” means anyone who uses it.

Who it's for

• People with a @mail.roanoke.edu or @roanoke.edu address. Every account is confirmed by email before it works.
• One account per person, in your real name. Don't share it, and don't pretend to be someone else.
• The Rock is a student project. It is not affiliated with, endorsed by, or operated by Roanoke College, and nothing here speaks for the college. The college's own policies still apply to you while you're here.
• If you're under 18, use The Rock only with a parent's or guardian's permission, and don't offer or accept a ride without it.

What you post

What you post stays yours. By posting it, you let The Rock show it to other signed-in members for as long as it's up. You're responsible for it, so only post what you have the right to share.

Don't post anything that:

• harasses, threatens, bullies or demeans anyone;
• shares someone else's private information — their room, phone number, schedule or photos — without their permission;
• is hateful, sexual, violent, or illegal;
• is spam, advertising, or a scam.

Some parts of The Rock have their own rules:

• Spotted is for compliments only. Every post is read by a moderator before it goes up.
• Course reviews cover teaching, pacing and workload. Criticise the course, not the person, and never post graded work, exams or answers.
• The marketplace is for things you own and are allowed to sell. No weapons, drugs, alcohol, stolen or counterfeit goods, and no selling essays or coursework.

The Rock is only a noticeboard

The marketplace and ride board let members find each other, and that's all they do. The Rock is not a party to any sale or ride. It is not a seller, buyer, broker, agent, driver, carrier, or rideshare or transportation company. We never handle money, and nothing on The Rock is insurance or a guarantee.

Apart from confirming that an account belongs to a Roanoke email address, we don't check anyone: not their identity, background, criminal or driving record, licence, insurance or car, and not whether an item exists, works, is safe, is legal or is theirs to sell. A confirmed email is not a recommendation.

Rides

• Every ride is an arrangement between the driver and the passengers, made at their own risk. The Rock is not responsible for anything that happens before, during or after a ride, including accidents, injury, damage, loss, delays, cancellations or no-shows.
• If you drive, you must hold a valid licence and the insurance the law requires, keep your car roadworthy, and obey traffic law.
• A gas share should only cover the real cost of the trip — it's the poster's suggestion, nothing more. Don't use the ride board to run a paid taxi or rideshare service.
• Tell someone you trust where you're going, and don't get into a car you're not comfortable in.

Buying and selling

• Every sale is between the buyer and the seller alone. The Rock is not responsible for the condition, safety, quality, legality or delivery of anything listed, for payment, or for any dispute, refund, loss or fraud.
• Sellers: only list things you own and may legally sell, describe them honestly, and don't sell anything recalled, dangerous or banned by these terms.
• Buyers: look before you pay, meet somewhere public on campus, and never pay in advance for something you haven't seen.
• Cash, payment apps and any other way you pay are between you and the other person. We can't reverse, refund or recover anything.

Emergencies

The Rock isn't watched around the clock and isn't an emergency service. If you or someone else is in danger, call 911. Report crimes to the police, not to us.

Dining information

Menus, hours and nutrition facts are copied from the college's public pages and can be wrong, out of date, or change on the day. If you have an allergy or a medical diet, check with dining staff — don't rely on The Rock.

Moderation

Moderators and admins can remove anything that breaks these rules, and can suspend or close accounts that keep breaking them. Every removal is logged. If you think we got one wrong, write to privacy@therockroanoke.tech.

Apart from Spotted, posts go up without being reviewed first. We may remove anything at our discretion, but we aren't obliged to watch what's posted, and we aren't responsible for what we miss.

No guarantees

The Rock is run by students, for free, and is provided “as is” and “as available”, without warranties of any kind, express or implied — including that it will be accurate, reliable, secure, available, free of errors, or fit for any particular purpose. It may go down, be slow, or lose something, and features can change or disappear at any time. What members post is theirs; we don't check it and don't endorse it.

Limits on our liability

As far as the law allows:

• The Rock and the people who run and moderate it are not liable for any loss, injury or damage that comes from using The Rock, from anything posted on it, or from dealing with anyone you meet through it — rides and sales included.
• We aren't liable for indirect, incidental, special, consequential or punitive damages, or for lost data, money, property or opportunity.
• If we are found liable for anything anyway, our total liability is limited to fifty US dollars ($50).

Some laws don't allow some of these limits. Where that's the case, they apply as far as that law permits.

Your responsibility

You're responsible for what you post, for rides you offer or take, and for what you buy and sell. If anyone brings a claim against The Rock or the people who run it because of your posts, your rides or sales, or your breaking these terms or the law, you agree to cover the cost of that claim, including reasonable legal fees.

Disagreements between members are for those members to settle. As far as the law allows, you release The Rock and the people who run it from any claim arising from a dispute with another member, including over a ride or a sale.

Leaving

You can stop using The Rock at any time and ask for your account to be deleted — the Privacy Policy says how.

When these change

If these terms change in a way that matters, the date at the top changes and you'll be asked to agree again before you carry on.

The legal bits

These terms are governed by the laws of the Commonwealth of Virginia. If any part of them can't be enforced, the rest still applies. Not enforcing a rule once doesn't mean we've given it up. These terms and the Privacy Policy are the whole agreement between you and The Rock.
